BNZ Internet Banking: For An Offshore Account, Why Not New Zealand?

The Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) offers internet banking to customers all over the world it seems.  The BNZ internet banking website is full of information about their products and services, and gives two customer service phone numbers, one local to New Zealand, and another for people overseas.  This gives me the impression that anyone, anywhere, in Boston or Hawaii, can open a BNZ internet banking account.

BNZ internet banking offers a wide array of financial solutions for personal and commercial customers.  From credit cards to home mortgage loans to low fee savings accounts, BNZ internet banking strives to be a full service online banking institution.  But BNZ internet banking is not just online, they do have a branch office or two in New Zealand.

BNZ internet banking cares about its customers as well as its community.  BNZ supports several local charities with links to the charities right on the home page of their online banking website.  One way that BNZ internet banking cares about its customers is to offer additional fraud protection by sending out each online customer a card in the mail that they will need to use to verify their online account.  More information about this fraud protection card can also be found on the BNZ internet banking website.

It doesn’t take any special software to use BNZ internet banking, but they do require an operating system that will handle their website.  They also suggest that you have java and Adobe loaded onto your computer for full access to their online banking services.

In order to open an account there are no fees.  However, there is a minimum deposit depending on which type of account you open, as well as monthly maintenance fees as high as $10 per month on some accounts.  This seems costly, but I’m not sure how it compares to an online banking service from, say, a Chinese location.

BNZ internet banking would be good for someone who needs to keep their money in an offshore account for political reasons or to obtain higher interest rates than their domestic banking options.  BNZ internet banking does seem to be a full service, online banking option for people around the world.
